Home page Tools for the road All about Gene & David How you can help Peanut Butter? Keep in touch...please! Our daily life on the road WAY MORE than a 1000 words We had to give this some thought
Ren-Sparks Gospel Mission

Gene and David both love peanut butter, and it will be one of their primary protein and energy sources. Gene thought it would be fun to have a contest to see who could most closely guess the number of jars (16 oz.) of peanut butter they would consume during their transcontinental cycling trip. All proceeds from this contest will go to the Reno-Sparks Gospel Mission. We chose this charity because of the enormous impact of their ministry to the homeless and needy in Northern Nevada.

Started in 1963, the Reno-Sparks Gospel Mission has served nearly 5 million hot- nutritious meals, given away more than 1.2 million pieces of clothing, and provided over 1.2 million nights of warm beds for those men, women and children seeking shelter from the often harsh environment of the high desert. Perhaps just as important, the Mission provides an intensive recovery program that focuses on the overall well- being of the individual by addressing their spiritual, physical and emotional needs along with vocational and educational opportunities.

The winner will have THEIR CHOICE of one of David's ORIGINAL watercolors (unframed) completed during the trip. David will do at least one watercolor in each state they pass through...mostly landscapes, but other subjects of interest to him too. David will occasionally post completed paintings on this website. See David's art website for other samples of his work.

YOU will guess the number of jars of peanut butter the TWO of them will consume. Only ONE guess allowed per person. Guesses must be made before Gene and David cross the Kansas/ Missouri state line. At this point, peanut butter consumption will be updated in the daily trip journals posted on this web site . If for any reason either Gene or David is unable to complete the entire transcontinental crossing their TOTAL consumption will be PRORATED (based on the number of ounces they have consumed over the number of miles they have completed).

NOTE: David likes his peanut butter mixed with honey to satisfy his sweet tooth and to reduce its stick-to-the-roof-of-the-mouthiness.

NOTE: Gene says, "Looks like David plans to eat his peanut butter directly out of the jar". Gene likes his peanut butter on two slices of bread accompanied by ample portions of jelly, jam or preserves....any flavor.

NOTE: Any peanut butter consumed by bears (or other critters) attacking our stash will not count towards the total.

HINT (lucky for you if you've read this far): During his 7-day Hawaiian camping trip David consumed exactly one 18 ounce jar of "old fashioned crunchy organic" peanut butter (the sticky-gooey stuff). Be forewarned that he only averaged around 30 miles/day of cycling that week (we hope to average 55 miles/day).
